Power supplies, don’t overlook their value
When installing any new security, CCTV or access control system, one of the first and most important considerations is power demand. Knowing this allows efficient and cost-effective matching of power supply to the system requirements. The same is true when a new device is added to an existing system. Will the system’s power supply be able to handle the additional power requirements?
The voltage produced by an unregulated power supply will vary depending on the load and on variations in the AC supply voltage. For critical electronics applications a regulated power supply should be used to set the voltage to a precise value, stabilized against fluctuations in input voltage and load. A filtered power supply will also greatly reduce the ripple and noise in the output DC. Filtered and regulated power supplies provide current limiting, protecting the power supply and attached circuits from overload.
Total Access Security recommends that all systems have a filtered and regulated power supply with a battery backup. The cleaner the power that is operating the electronics, the longer the components will last. More regulations concerning life safety are being enforced, so having a fire alarm relay on the power supply is now becoming a requirement. We carry a wide variety of regulated power supplies with features to meet your needs.
Total Access Security also recommends that your system be attached to a power-saving UPS, for extra protection during short and medium length power outages. We offer the testing and replacement of your backup batteries. It is recommended to replace your batteries every three to five years. The size of your batteries (amp) and the amount of electricity being used (load) determine how long you batteries will continue to keep your system working.
